Appraisals

Q         Am I legally obliged to hold annual appraisals with my staff?

A        No, there is no legal duty to hold regular appraisals with staff, but it is generally considered to be best practice to do so.  More important than holding an annual appraisal is regular performance conversations and regular constructive feedback.

Q         Must I give staff pay rises as a result of achieving all of their objectives set as part of the appraisal system?

A        Appraisals do not need to be linked to pay rises and so as long as you haven't promised a pay rise on achievement of objectives, and your appraisal system is not formally linked to pay reviews, you are not obliged to award an increase.
