Investigations

Q        We suspect that one of our warehouse operatives is stealing some of our products.  What should we do?

A        The first step in any suspected case of misconduct is to undertake an investigation.  The length and type of investigation will vary depending upon the nature of the allegation, however, would typically include obtaining appropriate witness statements and collating any relevant documentation and evidence, e.g. CCTV footage.

Q        We have discovered that an employee may have been falsifying his time sheets and have a suspicion that this might have been going on for quite some time.  Can we investigate this without his knowledge?

A        You can undertake a preliminary investigation without informing the employee but before you proceed to a formal disciplinary meeting, or involve other people in the investigation process, for example, taking witness statements, it is advisable to hold a meeting with the employee to inform them of the allegations.
