Key Holding

Q        I have just suspended a member of staff whilst we carry out an investigation into serious allegations of misconduct.  We don't want this employee to have access to the Company's premises whilst we undertake the investigation; can I ask him to return his keys to the Company's premises during the investigation?

A        You need to tread very carefully with this one.  Asking for his keys could be perceived as a pre-judgement of his guilt.  However, if he poses a genuine, legitimate threat to the business, which you are able to support with objective reasoning, you may be able to justify asking him to return his keys.
