Successful redundancy communication and consultation

Redundancies can damage your brand and reputation if communication and consultation are poorly handled. Often businesses focus exclusively on the redundancy process and forget to reassure customers, suppliers and remaining staff.

Make sure that the directors are available to communicate redundancies.  Employees notice if executives are missing when redundancies are announced and will brand them cowards.

Talk to your employees face to face. Employees have long memories. If treated badly by their employers, they will make sure that others know. Employers who treat their staff with respect in difficult times will benefit.

Redundancy consultation is essential if you plan to lose more than 20 staff but is good practice anyway.  Trade Union and staff representatives can help. Consider alternative suggestions to prevent redundancies and consider affected staff for other available roles.

Prepare internal and external communications to ensure that everyone receives an accurate message. Ensure that key staff know how to respond to press enquiries.

Business survival may depend on increased employee engagement to develop the business during the recession. Make sure you communicate with those who are not affected.
