Q Although we are based in an ethnically diverse community, the majority of our workforce is white. Can we actively encourage applicants from minority backgrounds?
A You can take positive action but you cannot positively discriminate. This means that you can place adverts to encourage applications from under represented groups, but you cannot select candidates on this basis. There is a lot of debate in the press regarding the merits of positive discrimination, but it is still currently illegal.
