Religion & Belief

Q        We are a Roman Catholic school, are we ok to specify that all our teachers must be practising Roman Catholics?

A        No, not if it's not relevant to the post.  For example, the faith of the maths teacher is completely irrelevant in the teaching of their subject.

Q        Two of my employees have had several arguments over their differing lifestyle choices.  One is a devout Christian who is opposed to homosexuality, and the other is a gay man.  How do I handle this situation given that they are both protected under legislation prohibiting discrimination?

A        Both individuals have a right to be treated with dignity at work; however, they do not have the right to impose their views on each other.  It's a case of clearly setting down the boundaries of acceptable behaviour within the workplace.  You need to sit down with these two individuals and explain that they have to respect each others' lifestyle choices and any further arguments may result in further action being taken against them.
