Time Off for Emergencies

Q        My employee took two weeks off to look after her son when her child minder was unavailable even though she knew about the lack of cover some weeks before.  I thought that employees could only take a few days off in an emergency whilst they organised other care.  Can I discipline her?

A        This is a tricky one as it can often be difficult for your employee to make other arrangements even if she has some warning.  Some parents simply do not have a support structure that will be able to help them look after the child and it can be difficult to get a temporary place at a nursery. We would recommend the informal approach before you decide whether disciplinary action is appropriate.
